The Hulme History
Society meet on the second Thursday of every month at the
Z-Arts Centre.
The Society has
members who grew up in Hulme from the 1940s, lived through
the regenerations of the 60s, 90s and know today’s Hulme.
They are a very social
group with interesting perspectives on Hulme and Manchester.
The Society is open to
everyone and are willing to participate to local activities around
about Hulme.

Hello,
ReplyDeleteIs there anyone in the society that can help with my research?
Looking at the 1851 census I discovered that my great grandmother, Susannah Makin, lived at an address in Warde Street, Chorlton on Medlock. On the census page there is no house number corresponding to where she lived, which was after number 203, but the words “Jenny Lind” (which I imagine is the name of a pub), and at the foot of the page the words “seven houses building”, but I can find no reference to a pub in any of the street directories of the 1850’s and 1860’s.
I was wondering if anyone knew of a pub called “Jenny Lind” existing in Warde Street?
Thank for your help.

Can't help with your question, but my great grandmother and her kids lived at 60 Warde Street for 1860-1880 decades. Was there a poor school near there?
